Race headsails earn their place through a clear crossover. A sail that duplicates an existing jib or Code sail adds cost and complexity without expanding performance. Use race records and crew observations to identify when pointing, acceleration or lane-holding deteriorates, then ask the designer to explain how the proposed shape addresses that range.
List the conditions in which the existing sail works, the point where it becomes difficult and the result you want to change. Include typical crew numbers, annual sailing, storage and whether delivery, racing or offshore use is expected. These details affect design load, finishing and handling choices.
Shape, area and measurements
Confirm certified rig dimensions and any rating-rule limits before design begins. LP alone is not enough: compare luff curve, entry, draft position, leech profile, finished area and sheeting coordinates. The clew must work with the actual track and inhauler arrangement without creating unmanageable loads or excessive spreader contact.
