Buying a mainsail for a cruising yacht starts with a written brief, not a material label. Use the same dimensions, sailing program and inclusions for every quote so price differences represent real choices rather than missing details.

Define the sail’s exact job

Define how the mainsail contributes in light air, balances the headsail and reduces for stronger conditions. Cruising boats often carry the main for long hours, so draft stability and reefed shape affect steering, autopilot load and comfort. Review the current sail’s reef depths and note where the boat becomes overpowered.

List the conditions in which the existing sail works, the point where it becomes difficult and the result you want to change. Include typical crew numbers, annual sailing, storage and whether delivery, racing or offshore use is expected. These details affect design load, finishing and handling choices.

Shape, area and measurements

Measure maximum hoist, boom black bands if present, mast and boom hardware, backstay clearance and desired tack and clew setbacks. Roach and batten choices must work with backstay geometry and the crew’s hoisting system. Reef tack and clew positions should suit the installed hooks, lines and stack-pack opening.

Do not order from a model name or an old sail’s edge lengths alone. Rig tune, rake, replacement spars and deck hardware can change fit. A loft should either measure the boat or give a documented measurement protocol with responsibility for checking every number before cutting.

Cloth and construction

Woven polyester is repairable and robust; radial woven, cruising laminate and hybrid constructions can improve shape retention as loads rise. Compare cloth identity, weight, UV stability, protective layers and corner engineering. Ask how the sail is expected to age under your actual annual mileage and storage routine.

Request manufacturer, product code, nominal weight and panel layout in writing. Ask what is included at corners, reefs, spreader patches and hardware interfaces. The useful comparison is shape retention and service life for your sailing—not “premium” versus “standard” marketing language.

Handling, reefing and hardware

Specify slides or cars, batten system, leech line access, reefing hardware, clew slug and sail cover compatibility. Test whether one person can hoist, reef and drop from the normal working position. Friction often comes from track condition or hardware mismatch rather than the sailcloth itself.

Hardware should be named by type and size, with any owner-supplied components listed. Confirm how the sail is hoisted, changed, furled, reefed, dropped and stored. Where loads are uncertain, involve a qualified rigger before ordering rather than treating the sail as an isolated component.

Buyer’s tip

Spend part of the mainsail budget on a track service, reef-line review and final fitting. A well-built sail on a high-friction system will still be difficult and may be damaged during routine handling.
