Define the sail’s exact job
The mainsail links the whole upwind package. Define whether the new sail must improve acceleration, pointing, heavy-air flattening or reaching power. Share photos and trim notes at the lower and upper ends of the current sail’s range so the designer can separate sail-shape issues from mast tune or control limitations.
List the conditions in which the existing sail works, the point where it becomes difficult and the result you want to change. Include typical crew numbers, annual sailing, storage and whether delivery, racing or offshore use is expected. These details affect design load, finishing and handling choices.
Shape, area and measurements
Capture P and E limits, actual hoist, tack and clew setbacks, mast bend, spreader and backstay clearance, reef requirement and rating-rule constraints. Luff curve and broadseam must match the spar’s bend behaviour. Roach and headboard choices affect both area and handling at marks.
Do not order from a model name or an old sail’s edge lengths alone. Rig tune, rake, replacement spars and deck hardware can change fit. A loft should either measure the boat or give a documented measurement protocol with responsibility for checking every number before cutting.
Cloth and construction
Membrane and radial laminate options should be compared by fibre type and amount, skin, taffeta, patch construction, expected hours and recut potential. Handling, reefing and hardware
