Why catamaran specifications differ
A catamaran’s form stability means it does not heel and spill load like a monohull. Sail, battens, cars, reef points, sheets and rig attachments can experience high sustained loads. At the same time, higher boat speed moves apparent wind forward, so reaching sails may operate at tighter apparent angles than expected.
Bring the sailmaker displacement, righting-moment information where available, mast and boom details, traveller width, stay positions, sprit design and any builder load limits. Do not scale a monohull sail specification by area alone.
Buying a mainsail for a catamaran
The mainsail often provides much of the driving area. Full battens support a large roach, but compression at the luff requires suitable cars, receptacles and track condition. Reef early: specify reef depths that keep the boat balanced and controllable rather than merely satisfying a standard percentage.
Low-stretch cloth helps preserve draft under high load. Offshore cruisers may prefer protective taffeta and repairable construction over minimum weight. Check batten removal, boom bag fit and whether the crew can reef at the mast, cockpit or helm without uncontrolled leech load.
Jib or genoa for a catamaran?
Many modern cats are designed around a non-overlapping self-tacking jib. It simplifies tacks and keeps the clew controlled, but can leave the boat underpowered in light air. Adding a larger overlapping genoa only works when shrouds, tracks and deck geometry permit useful sheeting.
For many boats, retaining the self-tacker and adding a Code Zero is the cleaner solution. Before buying either, compare target angles, deck hardware and crew workflow. A staysail or heavy-weather jib should remain settable when the primary furler or large reaching sail is unavailable.
Code Zero and asymmetric spinnaker
A furling Code Zero can become a frequently used catamaran sail because it adds area at the forward apparent angles created by boat speed. The luff, torsion cable and halyard need enough tension for stable shape, which places real load on the sprit and mast. A deeper asymmetric complements it for broad reaching; define the crossover so the two sails do not duplicate each other.
